A democracy aims at providing equal Opportunity for the deprived sections of the society. The Women’ s Reservation Bill IS meant to make legal provismns for reserving seats for women in the Parliament and State Assemblies. Theprocess started during the period when Rajeev Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India. During that time the Panchayati Raj Act, 1992 was put to effect. It granted not less than 33% reservation for women in the panchayats or local bodies. The Bill in its current form has the provision for reservation of 181 seats in the parliament for women. There is also a proposal of rotation of seats which means that a male member of parliament cannot represent the same constituency for more than two consecutive terms. However, the Bill should also include clauses which guarantee quota for women belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward castes so that these minority communities are not overlooked.
